Affricated dental plosives in Russian: phonological status and perceptual cues as a trigger of sound changes

Standard Modern Russian has phonological contrast between palatal- ized and velarized consonants. One of the most prominent changes attributed recently to this part of its phonetic system is the dramatic aƵrication of pala- talized dental stops which are now pronounced in most phonetic contexts as aƵricates [tsj], [dzj]. The paper proposes the hypothesis that a fast spread of palatalized dental stops’ aƵrication in Standard Modern Russian is triggered by the need to more eƵectively distinguish palatalized plosives in situations that do not provide the primary acoustic cue (formant transition of adjacent vowel) for their diƵerentiation to the listener. Palatalized dental plosives still should be treated phonologically as stops since in the context of homorganic nasal or stop they are not aƵricated (and often unreleased), while the fricative part of dental aƵricates in the same position still preserved in pronunciation of all the subjects studied.

A sacral text in the focus of diachrony: hardships of translation (as exemplified by the material of Latin, Old Greek and Germanic languages)

The article concerns the research of functional and linguistic peculiarities of religious discourse in different historical periods. The author considers the religious discourse as a method, consistently reproduced in time and space, of transmitting the complex of meanings of a sacral text with account of the mentality, religious experience and objective reality of people speaking a certain language in a certain phase of history. The contrastive analysis of polyglot sacral texts appearing as a significant part of religious discourse and being a subject of rendering into different languages is worthwhile only when historical, chronological, sociocultural and situative factors which have an impact on the meaning of a sacral text are taken into consideration. Since translators were expected to observe the compulsory rules of rendering the meaning and structure of the source text, translations appeared that distorted the text meaning or did not reproduce it accurately.

British and Russian Traditions of Children’s Literature, with Special Reference to The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time

В отличие от русской традиции, британские авторы, пишущие для детей и подростков, уделяют большое внимание проблеме толерантности, создавая книги, где ребенок или подросток с особенностями развития выступает в качестве протагониста.

Challenged harmony. Byzantine dispute over the form of the universe

Throughout the whole Byzantine era we witness the coexistence of the spherical conception of the universe which has its’ roots in ancient science and the pattern of tabernacle based on the Holy Writ. Only once in 6th century the opposite views became a subject for a dispute, but even then rather as a part of a broader theological controversy. Since that time the two conceptions survived in different cultural milieus and thence had no point of intersection. Only in 12 century Michael Glycas writing his chronicle in a simple language approaches the issue. Proving that the universe has a shape of a sphere he tries to make scholar knowledge available to a general public. By doing so he even dares to come into contradiction with John Chrysostom himself.

Changing Attitudes: Reconsidering the Role of Turkish in the Community of Pontic Greeks in Cyprus

The present paper examines the linguistic behaviour of the first wave of Pontic Greek immigrants to Cyprus based on their internalized language attitudes and dominant language ideologies. Since the time of its settlement in Cyprus in the early/mid 1990s, the predominantly Turkish-speaking community of Pontic Greeks has experienced a rapid linguistic and cultural transformation. This occurred primarily due to the local population’s (i.e. Greek-Cypriots’) reluctance to recognize the Turkish-speaking Pontic Greeks as belonging to the Greek linguistic and cultural ‘world’ in light of the former’s historical and socio-political tensions with the Turkish-Cypriot minority. More specifically, I will analyse the factors that have contributed to this rapid language shift and show what (non-) linguistic means are employed by the members of the Pontic Greek community to index their ethnic identity and belonging.

Contested spaces in the Troubles novels and Public Discourse: Visual and Verbal identity in Anglo-Irish Literature

The article examines how identity is represented through space in Anglo-Irish literature of the Troubles in the context of public multimodal public discourse. The paper addresses the structure and functions of the space in Anglo-Irish novels of the Troubles within the framework of visual and verbal identity. It also focuses on verbal and visual ways of identification of the place in divided society as it is represented by Anglo-Irish literature. The analysis of the novels demonstrated that place identity performed in the real life is represented in the novels and operate there not only as a recognizable landscape marker creating a historical background of the novels but performs several communicative functions. Visual and verbal identity represent community solidarity and unification. In case of identity cognition of the other community are associated with the threat. A more detailed view of four Troubles novels give a detailed picture of how place is conceptualized as an integral part of national identity.

Discursive Construction of Irish Identity in the Troubles Literature

Representing ‘The Irish national self’ in Anglo-Irish literature of the Troubles is one of the key topics, which is inseparable from British national identity since these communities are intermingled in Northern Ireland and compete for space and political dominance. Little attention of critics was paid to the analysis of linguistic means of constructing national identity. This paper examines how national identity is formed in literary discourse within the framework of discourse analysis in the Troubles novels. I suggest that in the novels considered national identity manifests itself through a purposeful choice of discourse strategies (construction, destruction and justification) and language means. Conceptualizing both identities is based on conceptualizing space and religious identity but what makes them distinctive is narrating political history. Irish national identity, as represented in the Troubles novels, is based on the idea of victimization and trauma memorization, while British national identity relies heavily on mythologizing historical victory. Both identities are constructed in binary oppositions to a conflicting community and are mostly negative.

KHODASEVICH’S INTERPRETATION OF NINA PETROVSKAYA’S ÉMIGRÉ LIFE: ON THE POETICS OF 'RENATA’S END', A MEMOIR ESSAY

Love, Will and Becoming in Vyacheslav Ivanov and Mikhail Bakhtin

The paper discusses the philosophical underpinnings of the ideas of the poet Vyacheslav Ivanov and the philosopher Mikhail Bakhtin. Compared mostly with regard to the Dostoevskian novel, these two authors prove to be connected by a more complex intellectual relationship, as the commentators of Bakhtin’s Collected Works have demonstrated. The present paper continues this broad-context discussion by revealing the principal difference between Ivanov’s and Bakhtin’s worldviews as it stems from the different orders of dependence of love and volition. The framework for comparison is provided by Max Scheler’s essay ‘Love and Cognition’. The primacy of the will causes constant becoming of the human subject in Ivanov’s poetic universe, mostly presented as self-surpassing. The primacy of love in Bakhtin’s philosophy of the deed results in the ‘becoming’ of the other, primarily in the form of the growing value of the beloved, rather than in the form of his or her internal existential transformation.

Mining media topics perceived as social problems by online audiences: use of a data mining approach in sociology

Networking for sustainable Foresight: A Russian study

A key element of any government's Science, Technology and Innovation policy is stable analytical infrastructure to support strategic decision making. Experience from many countries shows that substantial policy decision making requires collecting and analysing a broad range of information to develop proactive and future-oriented policies. Accordingly, infrastructure providing this information as well as evidence for policy-making must possess the capabilities for collecting, assessing, and processing information. However, information in this context is highly specific and subject related information, which is frequently embodied within expert knowledge holders. Therefore, information management in this light imposes special challenges on infrastructure.

The present study discusses some methodological approaches and practical studies to set up a network of STI Foresight network in Russia, integrated into the national Foresight and planning system. We outline the principles for goal setting, network architecture, creating a network of experts, selecting key information products, and methodological support. Russia's STI Foresight network, built on principles presented here, has been fully operational since 2011 and provides expertise on a large scale for a variety of governmental and industry organizations.
